Build your own charts in Insights

Insights is a board of charts you design from your logbook, grouped into tabs. It also holds the Personal Minima tab for crosswind and visibility exposure.

Insights lets you build your own charts from your logbook: hours by month, landings by aircraft, night time by year, and so on. Charts sit on tabs you can name and arrange.

This is a Pro feature. On the free plan, Logbook > Insights shows Advanced insights with a Pro badge instead of the page. Your dashboard widgets stay available either way.

Open Insights

Choose Insights under Logbook in the sidebar, or Open insights on the PIC vs Dual widget on your dashboard.

You start with a tab called Insights. The Personal Minima tab is always last and can't be renamed or removed. Use + to add your own tabs.

Add a chart

  1. Choose Add Widget (or right-click the board and choose Add insight…).
  2. Give it a Title. The default is "Hours by month".
  3. Pick a Chart type, a Metric and a Dimension.
  4. Optionally add Filters.
  5. Choose Save widget.

Drag a chart to reorder it, and drag its corner to resize it. The layout is saved to your account. Use a chart's … menu to Edit widget or Delete widget. Deleting happens straight away, with no confirmation.

Chart types

Bar, Line and Pie chart any metric against any dimension. Three more are built for specific questions:

  • Hours by Aircraft Over Time: total time, grouped by Aircraft registration or Aircraft type.
  • PIC vs Co-Pilot by Aircraft: your hours as PIC, co-pilot, dual received, dual given and command practice, each as its own series. Command practice is not PIC time, so it has a series of its own. Use the aircraft type filter to look at one type.
  • Dot Plot: every flight as a dot, by Duration or Landings, grouped by registration or flight type. It appears once you have 75 or more entries.

Metrics

Metrics are counts or times from your entries, grouped roughly like this:

  • Time: flight count, total minutes, total landings, and minutes as PIC, SIC, dual received, dual given, solo and instructor.
  • Day, night and conditions: day, night, IFR, actual IMC and simulated IMC minutes.
  • Aircraft and trip: single-engine, multi-engine, cross-country and dual instrument minutes.
  • Landings and takeoffs: day and night landings, touch and goes, instrument approaches, day and night takeoffs.
  • Other: ground instrument, low flying and commanded practice minutes.
  • Your workspace's custom fields: any number custom field that your workspace shows is offered too, under its own name. These work with Bar, Line and Pie.

Time metrics are counted in minutes from your entries.

If a chart measures a custom field that has since been hidden, deleted or changed from a number, it reads This widget measures a custom field that is no longer available. Edit the widget and choose another metric to save it again.

Dimensions

Group by Date, Month or Year; by Aircraft registration, Aircraft type, Flight type, Role or Flight rules; or by Departure airport, Arrival airport or Time of day.

Filters

Narrow a chart with Date from, Date to, Aircraft type and Flight type. If nothing matches, the chart says No flights match this widget.

Personal Minima tab

The Personal Minima tab plots the crosswind and visibility you have actually flown in, against limits you set. It is a Pro feature in its own right (the Personal Minima Tracker), and you also need Insights to reach it.

  • Crosswind exposure shows the crosswind component for the runway take-offs and landings you have logged, over time. Set Personal limit in knots to see which flights went over it, how close you usually get, and how often you fly in each band of crosswind.
  • Visibility Exposure plots visibility on your flights against a VMC minimum you set in metres. Points are marked Above minimum or Below declared minimum.

Crosswind is worked out from the wind in the weather attached to each entry and the runway you used, so it needs a runway on your entries. Without runway data the tab shows No crosswind data yet and asks you to add runway designations to your flights.

Looking back, not ahead

These charts describe flights you've already logged. They don't check today's weather against your limits and aren't a go or no-go tool.

Things to know

  • The Pro description mentions a heatmap. There is no heatmap on the Insights page yet. The closest thing is the flight activity grid on your dashboard.
  • Charts use the same entries as your totals. Deleted entries are not counted.
